29 29 2016 Rio Olympics The 2016 Olympic Games were held in Rio de Janiero, Brazil from 5–21 August 2016. Australia was represented by 422 athletes across 26 sports and finished 10th on the medal tally with eight gold, 11 silver and 10 bronze medals for a total of 29 medals. Australia’s medals were spread across 12 different sports with gold medals won in six sports. As part of Australia’s Winning Edge, in the four years prior to the 2016 Olympic Games, the Australian Government invested $340 million through the Australian Institute of Sport, $27 million of which was provided directly to athletes through the dAIS funding program.
